I almost spoiled this with an incorrect balance of forces with Northerners vs Elves.
Schlamarcel countered very effectively by what I should have deployed - village stealing. Fortunately, he got lured by the offensive abilities of his leader Red Mage, so I was able to kill him in All-in attack, very luckily.
